Apple Crisp

Living in Los Angeles, I am craving anything fall related as we still are experiencing 100℉ heat waves. A warm, apple pie is one of the personal highlights of my own Thanksgiving dinner, so I was searching for an easier and healthier alternative than baking a pie from scratch. This recipe calls for under ten ingredients and can be prepared in about an hour! I made this recipe for my roommates and they said “it smells like the epitome of fall.” One of my personal favorite ‘health hacks ’ for baking lately has been the use of maple syrup. I have been using maple syrup in replacement of white cane sugar since it is just as sweet, but also contains antioxidants, calcium, and iron (Levy, 2018). All of these nutrients help fight inflammation and boost your immune system. For this recipe, I also prefer to use granny smith apples. Granny smith apples help improve gut health by promoting the growth of ‘good bacteria’. I struggle with acid reflux and indigestion, so I am constantly looking for foods to combat my symptoms. Overall, this apple crisp will taste like fall and satisfy all your sugar cravings!

Ingredients:

  • 4 Granny Smith apples

  • ⅓ cup maple syrup

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • Topping Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • ⅓ cup brown sugar

  • ⅓ cup almond flour (can substitute with flour of your choice)

  • 3 tbsp melted butter

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp salt

 Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350℉.

  2. Start by slicing apples into thin slices and set aside into a large bowl.

  3. Add maple syrup, cinnamon, and vanilla to the apple bowl and toss with clean hands until each apple slice is evenly coated.

  4. In a medium sized bowl combine the oats, brown sugar, almond flour, cinnamon, and salt. Stir until well combined.

  5. Pour the melted butter over the crumble mixture and stir until the texture is slightly sticky.

  6. In a square baking pan, pour the apple mixture until the entire pan is covered.

  7. Sprinkle the crumble topping, making sure it is evenly spread.

  8. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes, top with ice cream, & enjoy!
